I've decided I need to acquire a Pax (preferably a French one, optical sound), plus a Monaco and a Europ. I may even have to acquire a Son (ugh!) to extend my collection of Pathé stuff. Can anyone out there help?

I have  completed the scanning in of about 65 issues of Le Cinéma Chez Soi,  (the French equivalent of Pathescope Monthly), a Herculean task. In the process, I have had painfully and by prolonged trial and error to learn how to scissors and paste electronically, as several issues were damaged and needed much "repair" before being presentable. Incidentally, all these were ones painstakingly sought out and collected over the years by Grahame Newnham. They are now sorted into 2 DVD's (won't all fit on one) with a pretty sleeve insert. The set is far from complete, with whole years missing in some cases. I have since acquired a handful more, but  I would dearly love access to the missing ones - is there anyone out there with copies, please?

Cans

For several years I have been using round cans, principally for 28mm and 17.5mm. I find them increasingly useful, so I thought I should share the details. Bear in mind this is a commercial company and are unlikely to accept small orders - my orders have always been well over 100. If enough people are interested in small numbers, I would be willing to buy some in and bring to, say, Ealing or Harpenden.

Hartle IGE, Paycocke Rd, Basildon, Essex, SS14 3HH Tel (for orders) 0161303 7394 or enquiries to 01265 520496. Website is www.filmcans.co.uk.

Left is a pic of an 11" (1200ft) 35mm can. I find the smaller 1000ft size just too small for some reels, eg 17.5 and 9.5mm 1000 footers. They will comfortably take 2 x 9.5mm 900 or 1000 ft. Right is a pic of a 7" 400 ft 35mm can about 4 years old, that's been kept indoors. A bit less shiny, mainly thru handling. These cans are not suitable for a damp environment; they will rust very quickly in a shed or garage. The 400 ft 35mm can takes a 28mm spool or 2 x 3/400 9.5 spools. I have also used 400 ft 16mm cans, for 9.5 single reelers, and 1200 ft 16 for individual 900/100 ft 9.5 spools. I suppose one could use the cans for 16 or 35, but that seems a bit perverse. I have found cans a good way to store empty spools, which are otherwise very difficult to stack and easily get bent. The 35mm cans are easy to write on with a permanent marker; the 16 are more difficult but it can be done. And of course you clearly label all your film etc containers, don't you?

Approx prices including VAT are 16mm/400 £1.30, 35mm/400 £1.35, 16mm/1200 £1.70 and 35mm/1200 £1.77. To this must be added delivery; for my last order for 225 cans this cost £20, or about 10p per can. I don't think the delivery charge would reduce for smaller orders, so it would be higher per can.

Photodiodes

Here are some pics of back and front of some diodes I have tested. For scale, the long thin one is about 9 x 3mm; the bigger square one about 7mm square, so pretty close to the old MS4B. Sorry the pix aren't to clear, as it's hard to see the smaller ones; these are going to need wires soldering on, not my strong suit at this sort of mini-scale. The one on the far left may even still be in its packet. No it isn't; I've wired it up - the backing plate may be ceramic. More details can be found in the Vox/Super Vox section under 9.5mm.

I got these things from Digi-Key in the USA. It does have a UK presence tho' at UK.digi-key.com. There is a search-by part-number function; Catalogue numbers (page 1615 in my paper copy) from left to right are:-

PDB-C165-ND; PDB-C171SMCT-ND; PDB-C607-2ND; PDB-C609-2-ND.

You have to be very precise searching by these part numbers - it insists on every dash. When you get to the page, scroll down a few inches to a table with Technical Catalog Information and the part number as the first line. Click on the part number, then on Datasheet on the following screen to get a pdf. file with pix and spec. Prices range from under £2 to about £6, ex-vat and shipping of course, but are substantially reduced for 5 (25 for some) or more.
