The red tinge in some images is similar to the blackening you get with photocopies. It seems to be due to the sheet not being quite flat on the scanner, as it's part of a bound booklet. It's red because otherwise you don't get the page headers in red. You can see from the 2nd and third images that the effect can be removed in B/W, but I at least can't do it in colour without degrading the image.
